About the Strategic Finance role

Strategic Finance at a high-growth company isn’t about closing the books. It’s about using financial analysis to drive business decisions - pricing strategy, market entry modeling, unit economics, fundraising preparation, and M&A evaluation. Corp Dev takes this further, leading acquisitions, partnerships, and strategic investments that shape a company’s trajectory.

The best candidates for these roles come from investment banking and private equity, where they spent years building financial models, evaluating deals, and developing the pattern recognition that comes from seeing dozens of transactions. Some may also come from MBB consulting with a finance practice focus.

When should a startup hire a Corp Dev lead?

Most companies hire dedicated Corp Dev talent at Series C or later, when M&A, strategic partnerships, or acqui-hires become part of the growth strategy. Earlier-stage companies often combine Corp Dev with a broader Strategic Finance role.
