CFO Recruiter for Businesses Scaling Finance and Raising Capital

An impressive CFO resume can still be the wrong resume for the job ahead.

A leader who has raised capital, built out a finance team, or worked through a transaction brings different experience from someone who was simply there while it happened. Two candidates can look equally strong on paper while having owned very different parts of the job.

Omna Search is a CFO recruiter focused on matching that experience to what your business actually needs. Whether the priority is scaling the finance function, securing funding, preparing for M&A, or taking on greater responsibility with the CEO and board, the search starts with the experience those priorities require.

Our broader finance expertise includes Strategic Finance and related leadership roles, with access to candidates from investment banking, private equity, consulting, and experienced operating backgrounds.

Start Your CFO Search

Look Past the Headline Experience

CFO experience becomes more useful when you get specific about the conditions around it. A capital raise completed with an established finance team, outside advisers, and a CEO leading investor conversations is a different assignment from one where the finance leader built the model and managed investor diligence.

Resume Says
What You Still Need to Understand
Raised institutional capital
Did they own the model, diligence, investor materials, and investor conversations, or support a CEO-led process?
Built the finance function
Did they establish the first finance infrastructure or professionalize an existing team?
Led M&A
Did they source, evaluate, execute, finance, or integrate the transaction?
Worked with the board
Did they prepare reporting, present results, shape decisions, or regularly advise directors?
Scaled with the company
Which finance capabilities did they personally add as complexity increased?

The experience on the left can be completely accurate in every case. The questions on the right tell you whether it resembles the work your next CFO will inherit.

Map the Finance Team Before Defining the CFO

A CFO is not hired into an empty finance function. What already exists below the role should change the search.

A company with a strong Controller or CAO may have more room to emphasize strategic finance, capital, and business partnerships in the CFO profile. An established FP&A team changes how much of the role needs to center on building planning and forecasting capabilities. A thinner organization may need a CFO who is comfortable building both the leadership layer and the underlying finance function.

That makes the existing team part of the search brief. Before going to market, establish what the CFO will inherit, which capabilities are already strong, where the gaps sit, and which hires the incoming CFO will likely need to make.

Decide Whether You Actually Need the CFO Title Yet

We don't assume every senior finance search needs to end with a CFO. First, we look at what the business needs its next finance leader to handle.

The role may sit within Strategic Finance if the priorities center on:

  • Forecasting and financial modeling
  • Runway and cash planning
  • Fundraising support
  • Financial insight for company decisions

A CFO search looks different when the role needs to lead the broader finance function and work directly with the CEO, board, and investors.

For fractional CFO recruiting, define the specific gaps the hire needs to cover, such as cash planning, forecasting, or fundraising support. Our guide to when to hire a Strategic Finance Lead can help determine whether CFO-level support is necessary.

A First-Time CFO Can Still Have Done the Job

Having previous CFO tenure is useful experience, but it should not become an automatic screening requirement.

A VP Finance or other senior finance leader may already have owned much of the work in your CFO brief: board reporting, planning, fundraising, team development, transactions, or working directly with the CEO.

Conversely, an experienced CFO may have inherited mature systems and a deep finance organization that look very different from what your company has today.

For a first-time CFO candidate, the useful question is how much of the next-level mandate they have already handled and where they would be stepping into genuinely new territory.

Look at What Changed Under Their Leadership

Some of the most useful evidence comes from what a finance leader improved.

For example, take forecasting. Did they inherit an established process, or rebuild one that wasn't giving leadership a reliable view of the business? Look at what they changed, such as:

Experienced Operators Can See Beyond the Initiative

Experienced operators can bring more than functional expertise to Portfolio Ops. They have seen how a change in one part of the business affects another.

For example:

  • How frequently forecasts were updated
  • Which operating inputs were brought into the model
  • How actual performance was tracked against the plan
  • Whether the output changed hiring, spending, or investment decisions

Apply that same scrutiny to the work surrounding major financial events. For IPO preparation, debt financing, M&A, or ERP implementations, look at the problems the candidate was brought in to solve, the decisions they influenced, and what changed under their leadership.

Match the CFO Profile to the Work Ahead

The strongest CFO candidate is not automatically the best fit for the business. We look at where the company needs the deepest experience and which candidate background is most likely to bring it.

Candidate Background
Experience to Examine Closely
Investment banking
Capital markets, transactions, financial analysis, and deal execution
Private equity
Investment decisions, portfolio performance, M&A, and value-creation priorities
Finance operator
FP&A, reporting, controls, systems, and finance-team development
Strategic finance
Forecasting, modeling, resource allocation, and decision support

These are starting points, not shortcuts. The search still needs to account for the CEO's needs, the finance team already in place, and the work the CFO will inherit.Omna Search recruits across finance, business, and operating talent, and related functions, with a network spanning investment banking, private equity, consulting, and operating backgrounds.

Fintech CFO Experience Should Match the Business Model

A “Fintech CFO” can describe very different finance mandates. A CFO fintech executive recruiter should look beyond sector experience to the business model, capital requirements, economics, reporting, and operating complexity the candidate has worked with.

Omna Search has recruiting experience with fintech and high-growth technology companies, giving us relevant sector context to sharpen the CFO brief.

Look Beyond PE-Backed Tenure

For private equity CFO recruiting, previous portfolio-company experience is only part of the picture. Look at how the CFO operated within that environment:

  • How directly did they work with the sponsor and board?
  • What did they handle around reporting and performance?
  • Did they work through add-on acquisitions or integration?
  • How did their finance priorities support the value-creation plan?

Omna Search works with PE-backed companies and recruits finance, strategy, and operating talent in these environments.

What Our CFO Search Process Looks Like

Omna Search supports the hiring process from defining the role through the final offer.

  • Scope the CFO role. We clarify what the business needs from the hire and define the profile around those priorities.
  • Build the candidate search. We source candidates against the role and experience defined in the brief.
  • Manage the interview process. We stay involved as candidates move through interviews and the company evaluates its options.
  • Support the final offer. Omna Search stays involved at the offer stage to help bring the hiring process to a close.

Access to Multiple Finance Talent Pools

Omna Search's proprietary network includes more than 2,000 business generalists across MBB, top investment banks, private equity, and operating backgrounds.

That allows a CFO search to draw from the candidate market that fits the mandate rather than defaulting to one conventional profile.

Experience Across 200+ Placements

Omna Search has completed more than 200 placements across companies ranging from seed stage through post-IPO.

Finance Expertise Beyond the CFO Seat

We also recruit Strategic Finance and related business leadership roles. That broader view is particularly useful when defining what truly needs to sit with the CFO and whether another finance hire may solve the problem.

Built Around Growing Companies

Omna Search works with venture-backed, PE-backed, technology, and other growing businesses where leadership needs can change substantially as the organization develops. The CFO profile is built around that context instead of a generic list of executive credentials.

Make Your Next CFO Hire Count

A strong Portfolio Operations hire can add expertise where the portfolio needs it, take ownership of important value-creation work, or expand the operating capacity available to management teams.

Inside a PE-backed company, the right business hire can take direct responsibility for an important priority.

Omna Search brings a focused network of business and operating talent to both types of search.

Frequently Asked Questions About A CFO Recruiter

What does a CFO recruiter do?

A private equity recruiter identifies and evaluates candidates for roles across the private equity ecosystem. The work can vary considerably depending on whether the search is for an investment, operating, functional, or portfolio-company role.

Omna Search specializes in business and operating talent, including PE Portfolio Ops and roles within PE-backed companies.

When should a company hire a CFO?

A CFO can become appropriate when the company's financial complexity requires an executive to lead the finance organization and operate closely with the CEO, board, investors, or other senior stakeholders.

If the primary needs are forecasting, financial modeling, runway planning, and fundraising support, the company may want to determine whether Strategic Finance leadership is the more appropriate hire first.

Does a CFO need previous CFO experience?

Build the assessment around the work the incoming CFO will actually need to lead.

For each major requirement, establish:

  • What comparable situation the candidate has encountered
  • What they personally owned
  • Which decisions were theirs
  • How they approached execution
  • What changed as a result

This helps separate direct ownership from simply having been present during a relevant event.

What should we look for in a CFO recruiting firm?

A CFO recruiting firm should be able to translate the company's financial priorities into a specific candidate profile and explain which talent markets fit that mandate.

Ask how the firm would distinguish candidates with similar titles, evaluate the scope of prior experience, and account for the finance organization the new CFO will inherit.

What is different about private equity CFO recruiting?

Private equity CFO recruiting can require closer examination of a candidate's experience with sponsors, boards, performance reporting, transactions, and finance priorities connected to the investment plan.

Previous PE-backed experience becomes more useful when you understand what the CFO personally owned and how they worked with the sponsor and portfolio-company leadership.

When does fractional CFO recruiting make sense?

Fractional CFO recruiting can make sense when a company needs senior financial expertise without yet requiring a permanent CFO.

Before choosing the level, define the actual work. Forecasting, modeling, runway planning, and fundraising support may point toward Strategic Finance, while broader responsibility for the finance organization and senior stakeholder relationships can indicate a different leadership need.

What should a company look for in a CFO fintech executive recruiter?

A CFO fintech executive recruiter should understand that fintech is not one uniform market.

The candidate's relevant experience depends on the company's business model, economics, capital needs, financial complexity, and what the incoming CFO will be expected to own. Sector experience is most useful when it matches those specifics.
